EN In 2017–2018, a Polish-Serbian expedition working within the “Danubian route of the Yamnaya culture” project excavated the barrow of “Medisova humka” in Žabalj, mun. Žabalj, in the northern part of the Šajkaška region. The barrow was one of the “Stari Žabalj” group of barrows located near where the Jegrička River fl ows into the Tisza. It stood at the edge of the Tisza terrace, on land covered with humic vertisol. “Medisova humka” was around 40 m in diameter and was 3.2 m high. Two graves were discovered in the barrow, both associated with the Yamnaya culture. In grave 4, linked with the older phase of the barrow, a cluster of human bones, not in anatomical order, was recorded. Grave 1, connected with the younger stage of the barrow, was a classic Yamnaya culture burial. Both graves have been dated to around 2850–2625 BC, and some detail of their constructions indicate that they were established shortly one after the other. The mound of “Medisova humka” had numerous modern period pits dug into it. Like “Ciganska humka” investigated earlier, the barrow from Žabalj has provided crucial data for studies on the funeral rituals of the Yamnaya culture in Vojvodina.
