EN Information about the expenses paid by the Convent of the Norbertine Canonesses in Zwierzyniec near Krakow in connection with the burials of nuns can be found in the earliest surviving records of the community: ‘Ekspensa pieniędzy klasztornych, które się poczynają dnia 16 aprilis po śmierci P[anny] X [Ksieni] Roku Pańskiego 1662 P[anna] Ksieni Zapolska nastała na przełożeństwo’ from 1662–1679. The document further includes the expenses for tombstones and reliquaries in the monastic church. The records reveal forty notations about funeral expenses, the first one from 16 April 1662, the last one from 18 April 1679. As a common practice, between 13 guldens and 15 groschen to 23 guldens, most frequently 15–17 guldens, were allocated to burial ceremonies. The burials of abbesses required much higher expenses. For the requiem mass for Dorota Łukowska (†1662), 100 guldens were paid and the purchase of necessary things amounted to 130 guldens and 26 groschen. The expenses after the death of Anna Zápolská (†1673) were 696 guldens and 9 groschen, of which 500 guldens were paid for religious services for the soul of the deceased. Further expenses were spent on candles and the materials for the coffin, the coffin’s production, and a silver plate to be placed on it. The researched source also states the fee of 241 guldens for three marble headstones in December 1664. It was the highest oneoff payment in the category ‘church equipment and decoration’ from the beginning of the records and one of the highest amounts in the nuns’ budget up to the mid-1560s.
