EN The paper is focused on small gardens in housing estates in Nowa Huta in Cracow. As the birth date of Nowa Huta is assumed the year 1949 when the decision to build a metallurgical plant on the eastern outskirts of Cracow was taken. My observations refer to the oldest housing areas built in the 1950s. The creation of the green areas of Nowa Huta followed two ways: 1. planned, according to designs of the greenery architects; 2. spontaneous, with no regards to city plans or urban style. Manifestations of the second trend are gardens next to the apartment houses. They were being created by the first inhabitants of newly built houses, on areas already deprived the previously existing rural character but not yet fully arranged by the new settlers. The presence of the gardens influenced the development of long lasting (occasionally till now) specific local customary law – the feeling of “ownership” and “rights” to a specific garden by the person who cares of it. This custom has been passed to the successive residents, often relatives of the gardenʼs founder but also to new tenants of the apartments to which the gardens were “assigned”. In the paper two analytical categories are used: “settling” (in the sense of domestication of the place) and “rooting”. The first term refers to the time when the gardens were created, the second to later period and to the emotional links that was formed between individuals and the place with “their” tended garden.
