EN The settlement from Gwoździec in south-eastern Poland represents the pre-Music Note phase of the LBK and is dated to ca. 5300 BC-5100/5050 BC. The location of this site in a sub-mountainous area, which was rarely chosen for establishing Early Neolithic settlements, is unique. The site was undoubtedly attractive in many aspects, such as its position between the flint outcrops of the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura and the settlement range of the Eastern Linear Circle, with whom constant relationships were maintained. Microscopic analyses were carried out on a series of pottery samples to examine the relations between the morphology and technology of their production, the primary function of the various forms, and possible chronological and territorial differences. Mineralogical-petrographic and physical-chemical analyses were performed with the aim to reconstruct the manufacturing process of ceramics, such as sourcing and selection of materials, preparation and composition of the pottery paste, and methods of making and firing, as well as to determine their physical properties and purpose. The methods of clay preparation varied, and they depended on the vessel type. There was a different method of preparation for thin-walled vessels, and another was applied for the production of thick-walled vessels. The physical properties of vessels made of particular ceramic fabrics also vary. This is affected by the dispersion and amount of crystalline grains, degree of mixing, porosity, and firing temperature. The technology of pottery production is similar for both kinds of stylistics present at the pre-Music Note phase, that is the Gniechowice style and the Zofipole style. However, they are distinctive from pottery associated with the younger phases of LBK (the early Music-Note and early Želiezovce).
