EN This paper focuses on ceramic imports and how they influence our efforts in dealing with ceramic regionalism. On the one hand, imports, if not correctly identified, may obscure our perception of regional variation, providing a (false) picture of considerable uniformity. On the other hand, they may contribute to the changes in local production, leading to increased uniformity, if local potters start imitating them. Imports also offer the most secure means of synchronizing regional ceramic sequences, however, certain stylistic innovations may appear locally at different times in different regions. In short, imports play a crucial and varied role in our approach to ceramic regionalism and our attempts to deal with its consequences.
