EN This paper focuses on the earliest Mycenaean-style pottery from this the of coastal Thessaly around the modern city of Volos. Our understanding of such pottery has been heavily dependent on the finds from tombs. To counter this bias, we discuss pottery deriving mostly from settlement contexts at the site of Kastro/Palaia in Volos. The pottery is presented following a division into imported and locally produced, a distinction informed by archaeometric analyses. Two aspects are discussed in more detail – the issue of chronology, including the inherent difficulty in dating locally produced and stylistically idiosyncratic pottery, and manufacture. In terms of the latter, our study shows that while all local pottery is handmade, this mode of manufacture is attested also for some of the imports from the Northeastern Peloponnese.
