EN The article interprets Mongolian social perceptions of China and Russia through the perspective of categories of thinking in culture. Examined through relational logic, these categories help identify ways of thinking about relations with neighbors and provide tools to explain why attitudes toward one neighbor remain consistently positive, while perceptions of the other one – extremely antagonistic. The relational approach highlights a highly local cultural context in which gives relevance to such concepts as “nationalism,” “xenophobia,” “collective memory,” or “postcolonialism.” The article thus clarifies Mongolia’s current neutral stance regarding Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
