EN Although 80 years have passed since the end of the Second World War, the issue of people who died (or went missing) in various circumstances during it is still an important problem from a scientific, historical, cultural, social, and political point of view. An example of this is scientific research carried out at the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice, Poland, where prisoner of war (PoW) camps operated during the Second World War. In this article, we present the results of archaeological research carried out in 2024 that led to the discovery and subsequent exhumation of 60 Italian soldiers who died in the camp in a.d. 1943–1944. Thanks to the use of an interdisciplinary approach and methodology, it was possible to examine and restore the identity of the forgotten, missing soldiers. The case study shows the important social and cultural role of field archaeology in the context of researching events from the period of a.d. 1939–1945, where it allows for making new findings and reclaiming identities of those who died during the war.
