EN During the early and middle Holocene, the southwestern desert of Egypt was a well-known destination for the Neolithic pastoralists who settled in seasonal camps along the palaeolake shores that were created after the summer rains. Several Neolithic localities have been discovered, but Nabta Playa is one of the best known from the archaeological research that has been undertaken for many decades by the Combined Prehistoric Expedition, formerly headed by Fred Wendorf and Romuald Schild. This area has one of the most complete sequences of Holocene human culture known in the Sahara, ranging from about 8500 to 3100 BC.
