EN This In Conservation includes four authors whose research has focused on the materiality of cemeteries, burial rites, and (not) caring for the dead in conversation with one another. Each contribution engages previous ones through contrast and comparison, thereby truly creating a conversation on the dynamics of constructing and deconstructing the materiality of death in diverse geographic contexts. Specifically, each depicts how materiality affects cultural practices by erasing the identities and even existence of dead bodies or by providing a means to care for the dead as kin. The goal of this In Conversation series is to invite readers to think about how the creation, authentication, and authorization of material forms of burial - as well as their desecration and destruction – inform political change and the patterns of everyday life.
