EN In this article we discuss the possibility that the late Neolithic Yamnaya societies practiced intentional mummifi cation. While usually only bones have been found in European cemeteries, some scholars propose that the observation of bone histological structure can provide evidence that the body was originally mummifi ed at the time of the burial. If we accept this view, there is a high possibility that intentional action was taken to halt the decomposition of some Yamnaya individuals presented here. In fact, further arguments support this hypothesis. On the other hand, the assumption that the preservation of unaltered histological structure can be directly linked to intentional mummifi cation is weakened by some recent data on factors aff ecting the bone tissue after death.
