Streszczenie

EN This volume comprises a summary of research work carried out to date in the Bargat El-Shab region. The authors present the results of the research project led by the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology Polish Academy of Sciences from 2016 to 2020, financed by the National Science Centre, Poland (grant no. 2015/17/B/HS3/01315), entitled Awaiting the rain. Economy, Culture Beliefs Pastorials of Today’s Western Desert of Egypt. The publication also falls back on the results of earlier studies conducted between 2005 and 2012 within the scope of the Combined Prehistoric Expedition. Research work within the scope of the project is concentrated primarily in the region of Bargat El-Shab. The goal here is to reconstruct the culture of hunter-gatherer and pastoral communities living in the area of the southern part of the Western Desert in Egypt during the Early and Middle Holocene. The remains of an enormous settlement with a number of remains indicating daily activities were discovered here and included utility pits, hearths, wells and objects of daily use. Concentrations of tumulus, a variety of stone structures and megalithic monuments were discovered in a few places around the former lake (playa). The landscape surrounding the lake is quite literally dotted with hundreds of hearths, concentrated near stone structures. The lack of characteristic remains of features or artefacts typical for settlements allows us to associate the hearth and stone structure complexes with largely undefined ceremonies performed in these particular places, quite possibly in anticipation of life-giving rain. The volume also contains specialist studies in the form of appendixes concerning: geology and geomorphology of this area (Fabian Welc); archeobotany (Maria Litynska-Zając and Grzegorz Skrzyński); archeozoology (Urszula Iwaszczuk); anthropology (Magdalena Srienc); ceramology (Agnieszka Mączyńska) and the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic settlement backgrounds (M. Masojć).
