EN The publication submitted to the attention of readers presents two letters from the Holy Land – from years 1763–1764 – of the Lithuanian Franciscan Observant Fr. Anthony Burnicki (1715–1770), preceded by an appropriate editorial introduction. That coming from Samogitia spiritual son of St. Francis of Assisi, at the end of his life guardian in Cytowiany (Tytuvėnai) and founder of the Calvary there, during his stay in the homeland of Jesus Christ was among others superior (praesidens) of the Convent of the Holy Sepulchre. From this period he left a diary with a description of his journey to the Middle East and stay there, which – kept in collection of the Czartoryski Library in Cracow – has not yet been published (while historians’ opinions about its cognitive value turn out to be diverse). In close connection with this diary are two letters presented here, the content of which is known to their publisher from copies contained in the manuscript chronicle Hystoria domus seu acta particularia seu diarium conventus custodialis Vilnensis Ordinis Minorum Observatium (from the resource of the Provincial Archives of the Franciscan Observants in Cracow). The postulate not to overlook these two specimens of epistolography, which in themselves constitute an interesting testimony, seems relevant in context of the postulated edition of Burnicki’s diary of his stay in the Holy Land (optimally in the Peregrinationes Sarmatarum source series).
