EN Any pieces of preserved woven fabric are of great importance for Polish textile archaeologists. Therefore, thelarge group of textiles found in the biritual cemetery of the Lusatian culture of the Hallstatt period in Świbie,Gliwice district, was more than a fortunate discovery. During several excavation seasons, as many as 576 graveswere found. In the 63 inhumation graves, remains of about 180 textile fragments were discovered preservedon bone remains and bronze, iron and wooden objects. These included fragments of woven fabrics, plaited rib-bons, threads and cords. The grave goods included numerous bronze and iron objects. The vast majority of thetextiles are tabbies made of plant fibre. Although their original dimensions are difficult to establish, they may bethe remains of shrouds, headscarves or other parts of garments. Other textiles are fragments of plaited ribbons, threads and cords. The archaeological evidence from Świbie is currently the largest group of textile products fromthe Hallstatt period in the territory of Poland to have been discovered and studied.
