EN Historically, disputes over estates of deceased family members often took up the time and resources of their heirs in Poland. This was also the case of the relatives of Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, Voivode of Vilnius and Grand Hetman of Lithuania. According to the bequests made before his death, his hereditary property was to have passed as a lifehold to his second wife, Anna Alojza née Ostrogska. This meant that for some time or perhaps permanently the inheritance from her late father would be denied to Chodkiewicz’s daughter from his first marriage, Anna Scholastyka Sapieha, whose interests were represented by her husband, Jan Stanisław Sapieha, Grand Marshal of Lithuania. The conflict between the widow and the stepdaughter, and between the families supporting them had a fairly standard basis, but what distinguished it was its scale. It required considerable funds, mobilisation of clients and wining over of influential allies. It unfolded on several planes simultaneously: in local assemblies, before Tribunals and at the king’s court, and required armed forces to make forays into disputed estates or to defend them. An important moment in the fight for the inheritance left by Chodkiewicz — won by the Sapiehas in the end — was the funeral of the Voivode of Vilnius. The present publication contains a source edition of an account of this occasion. In the commentary preceding it the author seeks to place the funeral in the context of the conflict over property and to point to the consequences of the events. He also asks a question about the uniqueness of the funeral and assesses its lavishness.
