EN This contribution is based on a 12-month-long fieldwork conducted in Rostov-on-Don in 2006–7, during which I examined post-Soviet educational practices among middle-aged teachers of religion with long professional careers. 1 Having converted to Orthodoxy relatively late in their lives, these teachers display a propensity to employ Soviet imagery, discourses and techniques in their current work in religious education. At the same time, having been endorsed by the State and introduced to school curriculum, Orthodoxy has become a new source of self-assertion for these teachers, contributing to the renewal of their secular social status which had declined in the wake of changes to state educational policy after perestroika. By transferring certain values born of another historical experience and adding them to the cultural repertoire of both school and church, they modify both these institutions from the inside.
