EN Mircea Eliade (1907–1986) was a Romanian philosopher, writer, and historian of religion. He devoted much of his career and writings to the comparative analysis of religion, with an aim to understand a human as Homo religiosus. He was a prolific writer, whose influence is still seen to the present day, not only in philosophy and religious studies but also in popular culture. Some of his books have had strong resonance outside academia, contributing to the development of neo-pagan, neo-shamanic, and New Age movements in Europe and North America. He is, however, also a controversial figure, both because of his political involvements before and during World War II and due to diverging assessments of his academic work.
