EN Among the few traces of knowledge of the chivalric epic in late medieval and early modern Poland, attention is attracted by the references to Merlin’s begetting in two demonological treatises: Witelon’s Letter (ca 1268), and the anonymous Postępek prawa czartowskiego (‘Th e Trial of the Devil’s Law’, 1570). Both authors used this fi gure as a convenient argument in their refl ections on the nature of demons. Th is provokes the questions: where did they get their information about the sage from? To what extent they were original, and to what they correspond to Western European knowledge about Merlin? And finally, to what extent they were comprehensible for Polish readers of both treatises?
