EN Leo S. Klejn (1927–2019) is obviously one of the most prominent thinkers who, due to his eminent contributions to the field of theoretical archaeology, has a permanent place in the history of archaeological thought. Klejn’s panoramic view of theoretical archaeology presented in his books and articles, especially in his seminal book Metaarchaeology, is the result of a long and astute reflexive process. One of the fundamental tenets of Klejn’s view is that there can be no science and no scholarly study without theory. He postulated that archaeology, as a complex discipline that is obliged to present its material fully and with all its interconnections, needs certain “endoarchaeological theories” specific to the discipline and encompassing all of it. Klejn also stressed the necessity of reflecting on the higher theoretical level directed toward the perfection of the archaeological discipline itself. He named such reflection “metaarchaeological theories”. They cover the philosophical, cognitive, scientific, logical and psychological problems that would enable self-criticism and the self-cognition of archaeology. In his theoretical reflection, Klejn did not omit to include the wider contexts such as the concepts of culture, material culture and historical process, proving how important are concepts and laws taken from parallel disciplines that are a sine qua non condition of the functioning of archaeology, such as sociology, history, culturology, anthropology, ethnology, linguistics, geography and others. He named these “paraarchaeological theories”. This article discusses the above-mentioned issues and many others related to the legacy of the theoretical thought of Leo Klejn. To describe the vastness, complexity and significance of that legacy, it is presented via the frame of the Kuhnian “disciplinary matrix” treated as a handy heuristic device to analyse advanced scientific concepts. The authors hope that by such a presentation of Klejn’s theoretical legacy, it will become obvious to many readers, not just those with theoretical leanings, that it provides a fundamental and useful guide through the maze of theoretical archaeological issues. This legacy, both complex and valuable, deserves to become part of wider archaeological thought.
