EN The monograph entitled Nations – Cities – People – Celebrations analyzes Czech, Slovak and Polish modern and post-modern societies from the perspective of festivity, which it understands in the most general sense, as the opposite pole of the ordinary. In the book, however, celebrations are not only perceived as a departure from everyday life with its responsibilities and cares, but also as politics par excellence. The authors focus on official holidays and national, provincial and municipal celebrations, minority ethnic and religious celebrations, church and family holidays, as well as occasions that are not celebrated or are even prohibited. The authors were guided by the axiom that the present is always shaped by the past. They have also highlighted the phenomenon of ritual, which is not only a means of socio-political manipulation, but also a way to satisfy the human need for stability and social order. Celebrations also have the ability to integrate and cultivate society, to bring anti-democratic and anti-social elements together with the general population. In the case of cities, they may also have an important commercial dimension, increasing the city’s prestige and improving the lives of residents.
