Streszczenie

EN A reference to the topic of Rhodian imitations from the end of the III and the first half of the II century BC is the result of a new study of Rhodes coins from the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź (Poland). This collection includes pseudo-Rhodos drachmas minted in Crete, Central Greece and Samothrace. As a result of many years of study R.H.J. Ashton, it can be said that pseudo-Rhodos drachmas with a low weight in relation to Rhodes coins were minted in Crete, in Central Greece, including in Beotia in Haliartos, and in Tessalia, in Eretria and Histiaei in Euboea, on Samothrake, on Kos and centers of Asia Minor, in Miletus, in Jonia, in Karii – Alabanda and Mylasa, Kaunos. The influence of such emissions in Lycia is also visible. The production of imitations of the Rhodos dramas began in Crete at the end of the third century BC, durable, in various centers, until about 170 BC. Pseudo-Rhodos drachma, corresponding to Attic tetroboles and Egyptian trioboles (the weight of the coins coming from different centers is different) could become supra-regional money, but it does not change the fact of their “war” genesis. Such coins, however, were not circulated in Rhodes. The article refers to the circumstances in which the production of such coins began in Crete, and the reasons for the prevalence of such coins during the Third Macedonian War. The dating of treasures containing such coins, first of all from Greece, indicates that pseudo-Rhodos drachmes were mostly minted during the Third Macedonian War. The first emission of the imitation of the Rhodos drachmes is associated with Crete. They must be tied with the First Cretan War around 205 BC. by the Rhodos against the Cretan cities (also fighting among themselves) “as part of” the fight against piracy. The Macedonian king Philip V (221-179) was also involved in it. In the Hellenistic period, the state of Rhodes was strong enough to set up its own army. The Rhodos citizens became renowned specialists in the field of propelling machines, while the Rhodos sailors were among the best. The problem of mercenaries in the aspect of the production of pseudo- Rhodos drachmas was evident in relation to the second century BC, above all in connection with the events of the Third Macedonian War. The analysis of the findings shows that such coins were issued for the needs of the troops of both sides of the conflict – Romans and Macedonians. The King of Macedonia, Perseus, prepared himself carefully for her. The area of pseudo-Rhodos drachma finds largely coincides with the area of warfare. Also in financial terms – important, considering that his army had 43,000 soldiers, 39,000 pedestrians, and 4,000 Konstanty, Kotys received from Perseus half-yearly pay of 200 talents for the cavalry. Until the end of the 170s of the year pseudo- Rhodos drachma was beaten in Greece and south-west Asia Minor. The “career” of these coins began with Crete and the activities of the Cretan mercenaries in a sense, it ended, if you refer to the situation of Perseus after the Battle of Pydna.
