EN The book presents the results of interdisciplinary investigations of the early medieval stronghold at Nasielsk (Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki powiat, in the Mazowieckie voivodship, Poland) and its place in the contemporary settlement network. The study considers the chronology and settlement structure of the complex. The first phase of the Nasielsk stronghold was built in the period between 860 and 865. It was completely rebuilt three times (phase 2-4) and at least twice destroyed (phases 1 and 3) and continued to function into the second half of the 13th century. The early medieval settlement in the region of Nasielsk is however much older than the stronghold and probably dates back to the 7th century. This means that Nasielsk is one of the oldest settlement centres in Mazovia, which evolved from the older phases of the early Middle Ages until the times of the Piast dynasty. Analysis of sources has allowed the definition of the boundaries of the hinterland of the stronghold in its later phases, when it can be identified as the area of the Nasielsk castellany. At this time it encompassed an area of about 360 km2 and bordered with the territory of the neighbouring castellan strongholds, Płońsk, Ciechanów, Pultusk and Serock. There was only slight exploitation of the land in the Nasielsk area in the 7th to 9th centuries, with just 16 sites known. In the period from the 10th to 13th centuries however twelve areas of more intense settlement are known in which at least 128 settlements have been documented. Some of the discoveries (a hoard of dirhams, a bronze button, the antler handle of a folding sickle, a silvered glass bead, seals ) indicate that it is legitimate to claim that from the 10th century, Nasielsk took part in long-distance trade.
